2016 NCAA Tournament Preview: No. 3 Utah vs. No. 11 Gonzaga

By Trevor Lowry

The Utah Utes will take on the Gonzaga Bulldogs in the second round of the 2016 NCAA tournament, and something tells me the Utes probably aren’t too thrilled about that one.

Gonzaga might be a No. 11 seed, but it certainly doesn’t play like one. The Bulldogs’ resume wasn’t the fanciest of resumes in the 2015-16 season. However, this squad still has two of the best players in the tournament (more about that later), and it has already taken down the Seton Hall Pirates (aka a No. 6 seed).

Meanwhile, the Utes earned a No. 3 seed in this year’s dance, and they took care of business against Fresno State in the first round.

What To Watch For

Kyle Wiltjer and Domantas Sabonis can’t (and won’t) go unnoticed. The two are very capable of going off for 20+ points on any given night. I mean, Wiltjer did average 20.5 points per game on the season, and Sabonis 17.5.

Needless to say, the battle between Utah’s Jakob Poeltl and Gonzaga’s Sabonis is going to be a very entertaining one. Poeltl, also a scoring machine, is putting up 17.6 PPG and 9.2 RPG.

Don’t let the seeds fool you, the Bulldogs are more than capable of winning this game. For example, Seton Hall was one of the hottest teams entering the dance, and it could only manage 52 points against Gonzaga.

While another win would send the Bulldogs into Cinderella status, there is nothing Cinderella about them (well, in a good way, that is), and the Utes are going to find out about that in no time.

Therefore, Utah is on upset alert, and the madness will continue to take over the month of March.
