Virginia Tech’s 4-4 start in the 2012 season can be described in many ways: confusing, unfortunate, strange, inconsistent and difficult just to name a few. However, there are two sides to every coin and the Hokies have one good thing coming out of the ashes that are this season. Star quarterback Logan Thomas has made clear his intentions to stay for his senior year.

Thomas’s draft stock has plummeted this year due to his inconsistent play on the field. Despite the fact that he has been so inconsistent this year he is on pace to surpass his passing totals in yards and touchdowns from last year, but he is also well on his way to surpassing his interception total from last year. In fact, the next time he throws a pick it will surpass last year’s number of 10.

The play of Thomas last year was a revelation to his coaches, teammates, fans and media alike. His size, strength and skill were all things for NFL scouts to drool over. Thomas had one of the greatest seasons a Virginia Tech quarterback has ever had, but that was 2011 and this is 2012. The numbers are close to the same, but it is very different to the outside viewer.

Last season Thomas was accurate enough and it was expected that he would bump up his completion percentage this year, but it has actually dropped. He throws a nice, tight spiral but this season he has been overthrowing his receivers on a fairly consistent basis. That inaccuracy is a big part of his high interception total so far this year.

Virginia Tech’s offense should be a lot better next year and that will boost Thomas as a quarterback. An inexperienced offensive line in 2012 will be an experienced one in 2013. Hopefully the Hokies will be able to find a reliable running back by next year. The only offensive group that will suffer some turnover next year is the wide receiving corp. His top receiver, Marcus Davis, is a senior and will leave after this season. The same goes for receivers Corey Fuller and Dyrell Roberts. However Demitri Knowles and D.J. Coles will return.

So despite the fact that Virginia Tech has struggled this season, there is something good to take away from it. Let’s face it another ACC Championship is not the goal for Frank Beamer and his Hokies, an unfulfilled promise looms over the program. An empty trophy case looking out on Lane Stadium needs to be filled with a crystal football. A National Championship is a tall order, but Logan Thomas might just have wide enough shoulders to carry the Hokies there… next year.
