If there were no bye weeks, we would have reached the halfway point of the season in college football, but in the AAC — with so many non-conference games making up the large portion of the early schedule — we are about a quarter of the way through. With a few teams having byes this week, there are only four games involving league teams, but we’ll throw in five, adding a big game for next year’s member, Navy,

The Midshipmen have had an interesting season, losing to Rutgers and beating Temple by the same score (31-24), and also leading Ohio State into the fourth quarter before losing. They also hammered Texas State. For the second straight year though, Western Kentucky has found the Kryptonite for the vaunted Navy triple option, and if Air Force was taking notes, it should prevail over the fount-point favorite visiting Middies.

Without Blake Bortles to play QB, the Knights are not the same team that ran through the league a year ago and destroyed Baylor in a BCS bowl game. Houston looked terrible in an opening 27-7 loss at USTA, but has looked solid ever since and should not only cover this two-point spread, but win going in a Thursday night televised game.

SMU might have done former coach June Jones a favor by firing him two games into the season. The Mustangs just do not have talent and are rightly a 36-point underdog to the host Pirates, who have established themselves as the early AAC favorite. East Carolina quarterback Shane Carden should have a record passing day.

Arguably, the visiting Tigers have been one of the two or three most impressive teams in the league, especially in a 42-35 loss at heavily favored UCLA. While that loss might have been an impressive result, pounding in-state rival Middle Tennessee State by 36-17 also was an eye-opener. The six-point underdog Tigers win this one by seven on the road.

The host Rams are an impressive 3-1, with wins over Colorado, Boston College and UC Davis wrapped around a loss to Boise State. Tulsa’s defense is having trouble stopping anyone, ranked No. 124 of 125 teams in points allowed per game, but should cover the 14.5 point spread. The Rams go to 4-1, while the Golden Hurricane go to 1-4.
