There are two eras that need to end for the Florida Gators. And the sooner they end, the better.
Saturday’s 42-13 loss, at home, to the Missouri Tigers was a huge embarrassment to a once-proud program. Florida was outplayed, outcoached, played sloppy football and seemed to lack effort for most of the game. That’s not what Gator Nation thought it was getting when Will Muschamp was hired as its head coach.
It’s painfully clear that Muschamp is in over his head. The Muschamp Era must end, and soon. This is his fourth season in Gainesville, and three of those years have not lived up to the standard of Florida football. Muschamp went 7-6 in 2011 before going 11-2 and appearing in the Sugar Bowl in 2012. However, last season, the Gators fell back to 4-8 and this season’s 3-3 mark isn’t cutting it in the Sunshine State.
The second era that must end right now is the Jeff Driskel Era. Simply put, Driskel is not an SEC quarterback. He has proven that time and again, yet Muschamp and the offensive staff continue to put him in the game.
Driskel has turned the ball over 13 times in the last four games, including four turnovers on Saturday. He completed only seven of 19 passes for 50 yards. He threw more touchdowns to the other team (one) than he did to his own team (none).
It’s also clear that Treon Harris is the future for Florida. Harris played well on Saturday for the second time in three games. He should not only be the future for Florida at quarterback, he should be the present. Harris has a much better chance of sparking the offense than Driskel.
The best thing for Florida to do at this point is to cut ties with Muschamp and have Harris inserted as the starting quarterback. The latter will probably happen in two weeks, when the Gators return to the field. And if Florida has another terrible performance in that game, the former will happen shortly thereafter.
