Listening to the radio the other day, a host posed the question: Is it time for the Florida Gators to hire away Steve Spurrier? The answer is absolutely yes.
The stars have aligned to create the perfect storm for the Gators to make a move. There is no possible way that Will Muschamp will survive this season. Even if he makes it to the end of the season, he will surely be let go soon after. On the other side of the equation, Spurrier may believe he has taken the South Carolina Gamecocks about as far as he can. This was supposed to be a championship season for the Gamecocks, and instead they have fallen far out of contention in the Eastern division. Spurrier has seemed agitated all season. This could pave the way for a Spurrier return to the Swamp, and nothing could be better for the SEC and college football in general.
Spurrier built the Gamecocks into a contender, which many believed he couldn’t do when he took the job. He’s still a good coach and a good recruiter, and seems to have plenty of energy despite his age. There’s little doubt he could make the Gators better, not to mention the other aspects that his presence in Gainesville would bring to the table. Tuesday press conferences are normally entertaining, but Spurrier being back at a powerhouse school would bring about a new-found arrogance that wasn’t fully enjoyed in previous years because of the lack of social media.
Rivalries would be renewed with Spurrier on the sidelines in orange and blue. There has been no love lost over the years between the Head Ball Coach and the Georgia Bulldogs, and the hate between them would reach a fever pitch. That game would have a renewed intrigue that would be great fans and the sport.
There would be no better way for Spurrier to close a great coaching career than to return to the place where he found so much success. Turning around the Florida program and then riding off into the sunset would be the perfect exclamation mark for the Hall-of-Fame coach.
Maybe he won’t want to move, but if Spurrier isn’t Jeremy Foley’s first call, something isn’t right in Florida.
