There are many headlines going around college football right now. Whether it is star players getting paid for autographs, or big schools getting upset, many in the media have been distracted from who should win the Heisman Trophy. The choice is clear. Marcus Mariota is the best player in college this season. Here are five reasons why.

Since the year 2000, the Heisman trophy has been awarded 12 QBs. Only Mark Ingram and Reggie Bush won the award since the turn of the millennium from a different position. While every year they have candidates from other positions, they never seem to have a shot.

Dax Prescott is currently Mariota's biggest competition. He is the head of the nation's No. 1 team. The problem is he plays for Mississippi St. They weren't on anyone's radar preseason. Beyond that, the team still needs to play Alabama and Ole Miss. They will lose one of those games, if not both, at the end of the season. These losses will end up hurting his Heisman chances just enough to give it to Mariota.

Oregon has already played some of the harder parts of the schedule. The only ranked team left on the schedule is No. 19 Utah. They have a difficult game against Stanford as well on Nov. 1. Beyond that, they don't play anyone who poses a serious threat.

With Todd Gurley and Jameis Winston going through such turmoil off the field, they basically cost themselves any shot at winning the trophy. Mariota has no such issues. As far as anyone knows, he has done everything right both on and off the field.

Just, wow -- these stats are ridiculous. They are other-worldly. In seven games, Mariota has thrown for 1957 yards and 19 touchdowns. He has the best quarterback rating in the NCAA. He has done all this without throwing one interception. Also, he has completed 70 percent of his passes. He can even do it on the ground, scoring five rushing TDs.
