UCLA Bruins quarterback Brett Hundley began the season as one of the odds on favorites to take home the Heisman Trophy. Those hopes have faded, but two key runs in double overtime last week against the Colorado Buffaloes saved UCLA’s season, and Hundley will use that momentum to propel the Bruins to a key Pac-12 South conference victory over the Arizona Wildcats this weekend.
Hundley may be a distant memory in the race for the Heisman, but much of that has to do with the lackluster performance of a UCLA defense that was expected to be a major strength. They are ninth in the conference in scoring defense, allowing 30.2 points per game and have allowed teams to hang around in many games that looked as though UCLA should win easily.
On the offensive side of the ball, Hundley has done his part to keep UCLA relevant in the race for the Pac-12 South title. He is second in the nation in completion percentage at 70.8 and has thrown 14 touchdowns against only four interceptions, much of which he has had to do under duress with an offensive line that has allowed a conference worst 26 sacks this season. When in trouble, however, Hundley has also been quick to use his legs, as he leads the conference in rushing yards by a quarterback with 415 and has found the end zone five times on the ground.
Hundley also has a history of success against the Wildcats. The Bruins had dropped five straight in the series before Hundley took over at the helm two years ago. In two games against Arizona, Hundley has thrown for 515 yards, a 77.4 completion percentage, and five touchdowns with no interceptions to lead the Bruins to two straight victories, including a 66-10 anihilation the last time the teams faced off at the Rose Bowl. Hundley has also rushed 24 times for 72 yards and two touchdowns in his career against Arizona.
Arizona’s defense allows the highest completion percentage in the conference this season at 66 percent, and is second-worst in the conference in allowing 308.1 yards per game through the air. Hundley will pick apart a porous Wildcats defense and will lead the Bruins to a much-needed victory over the Wildcats and keep them in the race for the conference championship.
