If Oregon Loses the Pac-12 Title Game, Mariota Loses Heisman

Oregon Ducks Marcus Mariota awaits Arizona

The regular season of college football has come to a calm conclusion for some, and a crashing halt for others. Either way, now we know exactly who will be facing the Oregon Ducks in the Pac-12 Championship Game. For a moment, we thought it would be the UCLA Bruins. Then after a week had passed, we were leaning more towards the Arizona State Sun Devils. Heck, some fans even found a way to calculate the USC Trojans into the scenarios – but very few people expected the Arizona Wildcats to be the chosen ones, coming out of the South.

There haven’t been too many teams that have beaten the Ducks in the past two years. However, not only did the Wildcats beat them twice this season, they’ve also walked away as the victor for two years straight.

Since we finally know who the contenders for the conference title will be, now is the time to consider exactly what lies on the line, particularly for Oregon since they are considered the headliners of the Dec. 5 meeting at Levi’s Stadium. Maybe that will shed some light on the possible outcomes. In addition to their current situation, Oregon also has the inaugural College Football Playoff in its cross hairs. Losing the conference title game means that the CFP goes bye bye for the Ducks.

Secondly, QB Marcus Mariota still heads the Heisman race by a fraction of a hairpin. Although his six touchdowns last Saturday against Oregon State will certainly help his chances, a loss to the Wildcats could potentially destroy everything they’ve worked all season to build.
