Heading into the fourth quarter, it seemed like the Michigan State Spartans had all but accepted defeat from the Baylor Bears in the Cotton Bowl. With the help of quarterback Connor Cook (and a clutch field goal block), the Spartans came away with an improbable bowl victory.

Despite a couple costly mistakes, Cook spent all day proving what a difference he can make for the Spartans. It certainly wasn’t a perfect game – especially considering his horrid interception early in the fourth quarter – but Cook proved down the stretch that he deserves to be in the 2015 Heisman conversation.

This win isn’t all because of Cook, though.

The running game, led by Jeremy Langford, accounted for 238 yards and four touchdowns. The Spartan defense made big plays when it mattered most, including the aforementioned blocked field goal late in the game and several timely sacks.

All in all, the Spartans’ effort culminated in an impressive come-from-behind victory that surely had the Michigan State faithful on the edges of their seats.

Many will wonder why Cook should be considered a Heisman candidate after this game. Yes, he threw two interceptions and showed inconsistent accuracy. However, he also stepped up when it mattered most, and didn’t let the offense shut down when the odds seemed nearly insurmountable. The leadership and clutch passing that he showed in the fourth quarter should be building blocks for an even bigger 2015 senior season with Michigan State.

Over the last few years, the Spartans have spent bowl season playing from behind. Yet again, the play of Cook helped Michigan State end the football season on a high note.
