Before we hand out the Heisman Trophy in a knee-jerk manner to Derrick Henry of Alabama, let’s give an almighty huzzah to a Heisman dark horse: QB Keenan Reynolds of Navy. In the manner of his Navy predecessor — and former Heisman winner — Roger Staubach, Reynolds has been breaking NCAA records. Let’s hope the Heisman committee takes notice.

Reynolds became the all-time NCAA leader on Saturday with his 78th rushing TD against SMU. That puts him past former Heisman candidate Montee Ball for the most career rushing touchdowns. The former Wisconsin had previously held the record with 77. In last week’s game against SMU, Reynolds had touchdowns of 43 yards late in the first quarter and eight yards early in the second quarter. This netted him another NCAA record — 15 straight games with three touchdowns per game. Lest we dismiss Reynolds’ accomplishments as serendipitous, let’s point out that Saturday’s game also included a 72-yard TD pass. Reynolds finished the game against the Mustangs with four TDs total as Navy demolished SMU, 55-14.

To put this in perspective, Reynolds is one of only four players in NCAA history to rush for 30 or more touchdowns in a season and only the seventh player in NCAA history to score 30 or more touchdowns in a season. His career points (over 390) are the most of any quarterback in NCAA history.

Before last Saturday, Reynolds was tied with Ball for the FBS record. Reynolds has had some amazing stats throughout his four-year career with Navy. He has almost 4,000 rushing yards already and has three more games left before his college career is over. We can only presume that he will add to those already extraordinary numbers. The Heisman race is still wide open, but Reynolds deserves a chance.
