Recently, Randy Moss suggested that he would not be returning to the San Francisco 49ers for the 2013 NFL season. He is coming off his only season with the 49ers, a year where he caught 28 passes for 434 yards and three touchdowns. It could be argued that his value was greater than his numbers reflect–he provided a deep threat for a team that relied heavily on their run game for most of the season. The 36 year-old future Hall of Famer began his career with the Minnesota Vikings in 2008 and insists he could be a key addition to a contender.
With that, let’s start some wild speculation about the uniform Moss will be wearing in 2013. The Minnesota Vikings seem like an ideal fit. Why? They lack a core of wide receivers, especially a deep-threat. Although Moss is past his prime, he still moves fairly well and has the ability to draw double coverage. A respected deep threat would help the Vikings largely one-dimensional offense stretch the field, and, in turn, give centerpieces Adrian Peterson and Percy Harvin some room to make plays.
Moss might not be thrilled to have pedestrian QB Christian Ponder throwing him the ball, but Ponder did lead Minnesota to the playoffs. While doing so, he appeared to make strides towards being a competent NFL QB and even showed some improvement throwing the deep ball, a task that would become much less difficult with Moss as a target.
It’s true that Moss‘ last stint in Minnesota didn’t end especially well. He was let go after a mediocre four games and a bizarre incident with a team caterer. However, it seems like his dismissal was due to the fact that Moss and coach Brad Childress butted heads throughout his brief stay in Minnesota than that he had an inherent issue with the organization as a whole. In fact, owner Zygi Wilf was completely unaware of Moss’ dismissal–a factor in Childress’ eventual firing. But now, Childress is gone and Moss seems to have embraced his diminished role at this point in his career.
Living in the Twin Cities, I can say that the Vikings fan base would endorse such a signing. Despite Moss‘ shenanigans, he remains a fan favorite in Minnesota where fans remember the high-flying Randy Moss of yesteryear–including his rookie year where he scored 17 touchdowns in 16 games.
The more I think about it, the more the fit makes sense. Minnesota’s offense desperately needs receivers–especially a deep threat. The Vikings were a playoff team in 2012 and if Ponder can continue to improve, they have the pieces to be a legitimate contender. Moss‘ career would come full circle in Minnesota. No matter who is behind center, an offense that features Peterson, Harvin and Moss would present any defense with logistical issues.
