Andy Reid Reveals Kansas City Chiefs Never Wanted Matt Barkley

Denny Medley-USA TODAY Sports

Rumors fly all over the place leading up to, and during the NFL Draft. One of the popular pieces of buzz this past weekend, was the Kansas City Chiefsinterest in quarterback Matt Barkley. As it turns out, that may not have not been the case, at all.

After the Philadelphia Eagles traded up to the first pick in the fourth round to take Barkley, it was reported they did so, because they thought Reid was set on taking the talented QB. But the new Chiefs’ head coach says otherwise.

“I know how rumors start and how people justify picks and all this other stuff, but I think if you look at our roster, we’ve got Akeem Jordan at middle linebacker; that’s the only player that we have there… That rumor started and I heard it, and I had to laugh at it. That wasn’t even in the picture.”

Reid is referring to the fact the Chiefs were after linebacker Nico Johnson, and they did eventually get him with the 99th overall selection. It also seems pretty clear that Chiefs were not interested in Barkley, and the rumors saying the contrary, were complete fabrications.

I’m glad Reid set the record straight, and called out someone’s bull crap. Barkley didn’t make sense for KC in the fourth round, because they clearly had bigger needs to take care of. By day three of the draft, it was obvious that Kansas City really wasn’t interested in the QB. Honestly, I don’t know why they would have been in the first place.
