Dallas Cowboys Rumors: Are Cowboys Looking Into Vince Young?
The Dallas Cowboys paid their starting quarterback handsomely this offseason and are in good hands with Tony Romo. However, it seems like the backup quarterback spot seems shaky with just Kyle Orton and it could lead to the Cowboys looking into Vince Young?
Dallascowboys.com has been on the Young bandwagon for a few weeks now and it appears there are building a case for the Cowboys to take a shot on the former first round signal caller. Nick Eatman wrote about the reasons why Vince Young would make a nice addition for Dallas and now former scout Bryan Broaddus echo’s those sentiments after watching Young’s Pro Day.
“During his workout, it was clear that Young had worked with University of Texas offensive coordinator, Major Applewhite on his throwing motion. His drive away from center, foot work and arm motion was tighter and better put together. He threw the ball with pace and his accuracy was outstanding at all levels. It didn’t matter whether the target was stationary or on the move like Marquise Goodwin running the deep “In” Young had the ball right there.”
From everything you hear, the Young workout was great but let’s be honest, the real reason the Cowboys should consider it is because of the play from Kyle Orton in OTAs and mini-camp. By all accounts Orton wasn’t very sharp and the Cowboys coaches took notice, which is probably why they put in a claim for Mike Kafka last week as well.
Behind starter Tony Romo it’s clear that the Cowboys are not happy with what they’ve got and it wouldn’t cost them much to bring Young in for training camp. If they don’t like what they see or if Orton improves with fewer repetitions during camp then they can just release Young and everyone can go on about their business.
Young could also be a good fit in Dallas because of his athleticism, which could help him avoid the rush. It’s no secret the Cowboys offensive line has had its struggles and having a quarterback with mobility is a luxury the Cowboys need.
The bottom line is that this is less about Young and more about what happens if Tony Romo gets hurt. It’s the exact reason why I have stated time and time again the Cowboys needed to draft a QB to develop, yet they continue to ignore the most important position in football.
It’s unlikely the Dallas Cowboys bring in Vince Young, but it is something they should consider.
