Cleveland Browns: Trent Richardson’s Preseason Absence is Nothing to Worry About

Ron Schwane-USA TODAY Sports

This might sound hilarious to some of you, but, the Cleveland Browns might surprise some folks in 2013. There is a heck of a lot of optimism out of Browns camp this year and they could be quite fun to watch on offense.

Did I just say that? It didn’t sound right, certainly didn’t feel right but just may wind up being a fact.

With three significant second-year players on the offensive side of the ball, the Browns are excited about what they have going. Quarterback Brandon Weeden has found some solid chemistry with fellow sophomore Josh Gordon, and of course, there’s Trent Richardson in the back field.

Thursday night, Richardson was held out of the game as a precautionary measure. He had suffered a good hit to the shin recently in camp and was kept out of practice for a little while because of it.

There’s no reason to worry, though. Richardson is expected back even before the start of the regular season, but the team will absolutely play it safe with their prized bull. The guy has a lot riding on his shoulders this year and is supposed to be a top-tier back in fantasy leagues as well. The Browns want him healthy, and he is almost guaranteed to be soon enough.

As the Browns took on the St. Louis Rams Thursday night, Weeden excelled going 10/13 for 112 yards and a touchdown, with no interceptions. As mentioned previously, he and his Browns could shock some people this year. With Richardson back in the lineup, Weeden’s role diminishes just a bit and the pressure is distributed a bit more evenly.

Expect Richardson back before the beginning of the regular season and ready for a fantastic second year as a pro.
