San Diego Chargers wide receiver Malcom Floyd received more good news regarding his injured knee on Wednesday. Floyd got a second opinion confirming no structural damage to his knee and that no further damage can be done. Returning to the field will be a matter of how he feels and if he can push through the pain. Floyd’s injury will likely hold him out for the remainder of the preseason, but it looks like there’s good chance he’ll be able to play in the regular season opener against the Houston Texans.

“It could have been worse. … (The knee) feels better than it did yesterday,” Floyd said on Tuesday. “Fortunately, I kind of dodged a bullet.”

Floyd is expected to be a huge part of the Chargers offense, especially with the loss of fellow starting receiver Danario Alexander, who tore his ACL last week. Floyd’s injury was originally thought to be just as serious as Alexander’s, but thankfully, that wasn’t the case.

Following the loss of the 6-foot-5 Alexander, Floyd, who also stands 6-foot-5, is the last of the big-bodied Chargers’ receivers who typically win jump ball situations when Philip Rivers simply throws it up to them. The Chargers will also certainly need Floyd’s big-play ability to stretch the field. Floyd has an impressive 17.1 yards per reception throughout his career. He is also the only remaining receiver with proven chemistry with Rivers.

As Floyd sits out, the Chargers will rely on the inexperienced duo Vincent Brown and Keenan Allen as starters for the remainder of preseason. The two have also dealt with injuries in training camp. Brown missed several practices due to a hamstring issue, and Allen missed Tuesday’s practice due to complications with the same knee that caused Allen to fall in the draft to the Chargers in the first place.
