Tennessee Titans: Chris Johnson Getting Slept on Thanks, Oddly, to Shonn Greene
I’ve been going to bat for a 2013 Chris Johnson resurgence all offseason, so it’s no departure for me to take opposition to anything even implying a drop-off from his 2012 stats. I know a relatively high percentage of CJ2K’s yards came on a big plays, but for me that’s a positive in considering those big plays will be complemented with increased consistency thanks to some major offensive line additions for the Tennessee Titans.
Rotoworld’s Evan Silva released his fantasy Top 150, placing as his 23rd overall player and 15th-ranked back, behind Adrian Peterson, CJ Spiller, Doug Martin, LeSean McCoy, Trent Richardson, Jamaal Charles, Marshawn Lynch, Ray Rice, Alfred Morris, Arian Foster, Stevan Ridley, Matt Forte, Frank Gore and Steven Jackson. Really, that’s how far the 2,000-yard rusher has fallen?
“OL upgrades help, but still boom-bust RB losing GL carries,” Silva wrote. Even if Shonn Greene wrests that goal-line role away and holds tight, I still think Johnson holds far more fantasy value and will benefit from a knack for hitting home runs.
Greene and Johnson have the same No. 1 of rushing touchdowns (1) and goal-line rushing touchdowns (0) this preseason. Greene might have been paid handsomely to be the goal-line, change-of-pace guy, but I believe Johnson’s sheer talent advantage will shine through enough to keep his touchdown numbers in a decent place.
In explaining CJ2K’s long touchdown in the opening game of the preseason, new Titans guard Andy Levitre laid out the scenario that has Titans fans salivating about how Johnson can run behind Levitre and Chance Warmack.
“I just went and dove and cut the guy and CJ cut the guy and CJ cut back right off either mine or Roos’ block and had a lot of open field for him to run,” said Levitre, via the team website. “If we can get him to a one-on-one matchup with the safety, I think the odds are in our favor.”
