New York Giants Rumors: Team May Sign Jonathan Dwyer; Would Be Perfect Fit
A few days after the NFL roster limit had to be reached, the Pittsburgh Steelers’ move to cut running back Jonathan Dwyer is still puzzling to many out there. Not surprisingly, Dwyer is attracting interest and could wind up on a new team very shortly.
One of those teams interested is that of the New York Giants. After the Giants lost their second string and goal-line back Andre Brown to a broken leg, they immediately hit the market for a backup. Dwyer was brought in along with Beanie Wells on Tuesday for a workout.
David Wilson will see the majority of the workload no matter what, but the Giants would be wise to try out the two-back system if they were to sign Dwyer.
In three seasons with the Steelers, Dwyer rushed 181 times for 774 yards and scored two touchdowns. He also had 19 catches for 112 yards. Last season was his most active, averaging 4.0 yards per carry as he ran for 623 yards and scored those two rushing touchdowns. Pittsburgh has recently struggled staying healthy at the running back position and Dwyer was a consistent contributor.
With Dwyer potentially playing behind Wilson, the Giants would get themselves another goal-line back who could change the pace every once and a while. Dwyer would be a perfect fit. Wilson is the quicker, speedier and smaller back while Dwyer is a 230 pound bruiser. It would be a great situation for both the Giants and Dwyer, as he looks to find a job yet again.
If the Giants do not sign Dwyer, there are still a couple of guys out there but I don’t believe any of them fit as well as the former Steeler. Look for New York to make a move sometime soon and Dwyer could be headed to the Big Apple shortly.
