Ed Reed’s Out For Monday’s Game; Houston Texans’ Defense In Trouble

Due to a agonizing postseason loss to the New England Patriots, the Houston Texans‘ 2012 defense was seen as by many as a group that needed some work. Well, Texans general manager Rick Smith pleased those narrow-minded fans by bringing in reigning Super Bowl champion Ed Reed. Now, the smarter move would have been for the Texans to retain standout safety Glover Quin, yet Houston allowed him to test free agency and eventually sign with the Detroit Lions.

Unlike Quin, Reed has battled injuries his entire career, so it’s no surprise that he is on the Texans’ inactive list for Monday’s game versus the San Diego Chargers.

Without any real offseason practice, Reed wasn’t really expected to play through his hip injury against the lowly Chargers. Even still, this is the kind of lingering injury that may have Houston fans frustrated that the team decided to bring on the 34-year-old Reed instead of keeping the hometown Quin in town.

Spending money on older free agents like Reed isn’t going to put the Texans in the Super Bowl conversation and without its starting safety, Houston’s defense will be playing catch up well into the regular season. So while the Texans will likely steamroll the Chargers on Monday, this safety scenario is one to keep a close eye on for the rest of the year.
