You better be ready for some offense when the Philadelphia Eagles and Washington Redskins open their seasons Monday night, not just some football. Both these teams have high-powered offenses and suspect defenses.
The Eagles were third-worst in the league last season at giving up points to the other team, and the Redskins didn’t finish much better at 11th. Both defenses had trouble stopping the other team from finding the end zone, and tonight they find themselves up against dynamic quarterbacks and innovative offenses.
Chip Kelly will finally show the world what he has up his sleeve for the NFL. While at the University of Oregon, he orchestrated one of the most explosive scoring offenses we’ve ever seen on a football field. They moved the ball at will, scoring so fast that opposing teams were left guessing what had happened to them.
Not to be outdone, the Redskins have a forward-looking offensive scheme themselves. Last year, they unleashed Robert Griffin III and the read-option offense on the professional football universe. RG3 dominated the landscape with his playmaking ability until he took too many hits and limped into the end of the season with a blown-out knee.
Now that knee is supposedly fully healed, and he’s as motivated as ever to prove he’s the same player that we all thought would be the next evolution of the modern NFL quarterback.
Any way you look at it, this game shapes up to be a high-scoring affair. When you combine weak defenses with explosive offenses, touchdowns and points will follow. All I know is I can’t wait to enjoy the show. Time to get your popcorn ready.
