When Michael Vick came up lame running out of bounds the entire Philadelphia Eagles fan base held their breath. On this day it didn’t matter. Second year quarterback Nick Foles came in and was masterful in relief of Vick, rallying the Eagles from behind to beat the New York Giants 36-21.

Foles was in total command of the offense. He made a few wow throws particularly to Brent Celek and DeSean Jackson. Helping matters the defense finally showed up forcing three fourth quarter Eli Manning interceptions in what was a total implosion for the Giants in the final quarter.

The fourth quarter collapse was made possible with Foles’ efficiency. His quarterback rating was over 100 and his completion percentage was above 60 as he finished with 200 yards passing and two touchdowns in second half duty. Foles played near flawless football in his replacement of Vick.

This raises the question of will there now be a quarterback controversy in Philly? It is certainly possible. While Vick was effective with his legs he was highly ineffective in the passing game and moved the football a majority of the time using purely his athletic ability. Foles came in and looked more like a classic pocket quarterback, picking the Giants’ woeful secondary apart piece by piece with pinpoint accurate throws both in the intermediate and long passing game.

There’s no doubt head coach Chip Kelly will be fielding questions about the quarterback position, and for good reason. Foles may have forced himself into the conversation of starting quarterback after a near perfect half of football in  a crucial, must win divisional game.
