The Kansas City Chiefs want extra draft picks so bad that they can taste it. GM John Dorsey and coach Andy Reid have repeatedly stated that they believe in building through the draft. Their philosophy is going to be tough to carry out this year considering they have no second-round selection due to the Alex Smith trade, while the team received no compensatory picks.
The good news is that a lot of other teams did. It may not sound like the best news, but it means that every team that received multiple comp picks is much more likely to trade with the Chiefs for their No. 23 overall pick. It would be ideal for Kansas City to trade down for more picks, and now their trade targets should be much clearer.
With four comp picks each, the Baltimore Ravens and New York Jets should be all over the Chiefs’ radar. The Houston Texans, Dallas Cowboys, Atlanta Falcons, Pittsburgh Steelers and St. Louis Rams are also good trade suitors with three comp picks apiece. Conversations with the Cincinnati Bengals, Green Bay Packers and Detroit Lions couldn’t hurt either, as each of those organizations got two bonus picks.
Teams aren’t allowed to trade the picks they were awarded, though having them will soften the blow if they decide to trade their other selections. The Chiefs need to put the word out that pick No. 23 is available for the right price.
You never know what’s going to happen in the draft. Kansas City could have a few teams competing for their first-round selection if the right players drop. If Dorsey and Reid are serious about building through the draft, they’d be wise to let the pick-heavy teams know that No. 23 is for sale.
