The San Francisco 49ers finds themselves at 1-2 after back-to-back losses. For most of us, it is obvious the 49ers of 2014 are not the 49ers of past years. They simply do not have the same fire and determination that led them to three straight NFC Championship games. However, wide receiver Anquan Boldin does not believe the losses have anything to do with how San Francisco has been playing.
“For me, it’s been obvious the last two weeks: The amount of calls that have gone against us and the amount of calls that we’ve gotten hasn’t been close,” Boldin said, according to the Sacramento Bee. “Every week, it’s the same thing — send the tape in, the NFL just reports back, ‘We made a mistake.’ But at the same time, the crap cost us another game. At some point, they need to be held accountable.”
There is no denying that flags have been tossed at an alarming rate in all of the games through the first three weeks of the season. At the same time, Boldin is wrong to blame the team’s losing on the officiating.
The reality is the 49ers lost to the Chicago Bears in Week 2 because quarterback Colin Kaepernick could not stop turning the ball over. Sure, 16 penalties certainly did not help San Francisco in the loss, but any time a team gives another team that many opportunities there is only going to be one outcome. The loss to the Arizona Cardinals on Sunday had a lot to do with the inability to run the football and Kaepernick failing to remain consistent. Even worse, San Francisco’s defense has several issues they must fix if they want to get back to their winning ways.
I can understand why Boldin’s frustration is boiling over, but blaming the officials in the media is the wrong approach to take.
