New York Jets’ Problems Shouldn’t Fall on Rex Ryan

It’s inevitable that  New York Jets head coach Rex Ryan will be fired when the season is over. To try and tell a fanbase that a coach should stick around after a season that will most likely result in a top-five draft pick is not an easy thing. Even though Ryan is on his way out the door, all of the Jets’ issues begin in the GM’s office.

There’s no denying that Ryan is one of the funnest coaches to follow around. He is constantly cracking jokes, lightening the mood and poking fun at other coaches and players, but that’s part of his personality.

On the field, especially on the defensive side of the ball, he is one of the best defensive-minded coaches in the league. Despite a terrible season thus far, the Jets’ defense is still ranked No. 7 in the league, and that number is a credit to Ryan and his ability to get the most out of his players.

Going into the season, the Jets were without their top two corners Dee Milliner and Dexter McDougle, and the team’s secondary was a mess. However, I can honestly say that the Jets’ secondary isn’t the reason why this team is 2-9. The problem with the Jets’ roster and play doesn’t fall on Ryan — it all falls of GM John Idzik and also offensive coordinator Marty Mornhinweg.

If owner Woody Johnson wants to fire Ryan and put the blame on him, then he must clean house and get rid of Idzik and Mornhinweg as well.

Even though Mornhinweg faces the same problems that Ryan does, he still hasn’t gotten enough out of his players. The Jets lack talent, and while Idzik added wide receiver Eric Decker in the offseason and Percy Harvin recently, they’re not going flourish unless there is a steady quarterback under center, something the team’s been missing for years.

For the Jets to enter the season with so much money under the cap and not use it is criminal. It shows the fanbase and the rest of the Jets’ players that they’re pretty much tanking this year in order to rebuild the team down the road. In the NFL, teams don’t have time to rebuild a franchise from the ground up — there is no farm system or long-term development of players.

The Jets are going to be faced with a ton of roster decision at the end of the year and Ryan will mostly likely be gone. If Idzik and Mornhinweg remain, it’d be another mistake to add to the list.
