5 Reasons Why Brian Hoyer Should Remain Cleveland Browns’ Starting QB

Out of embarrassing offensive futility, the Cleveland Browns turned to Johnny Manziel last week against the Bills. Benching Brian Hoyer led to a quick touchdown, but it didn’t lead me to believe that his year is done.

Name two wideouts on the Cleveland roster not named Josh Gordon or Miles Austin. Having trouble? These are the guys Hoyer had to throw to for over half of the season, and somehow he made it work. If Gordon and Hoyer are allowed to regain their chemistry, the Browns could seize the AFC North.

The blame can’t be placed squarely on Hoyer. Cleveland couldn’t run the ball against Buffalo, averaging just 2.8 yards per rush. This had a lot to do with the Browns’ poor line play, allowing the Bills to push deep into Cleveland’s backfield while filling every gap. The Bills also prepared well for Hoyer, and the fact that Manziel scored a touchdown on his first drive should only be attributed to a lack of familiarity on the part of the Bills.

Now that the Browns appear to be ready to inject Johnny Manziel into a game, maybe they’ll have the confidence to give him the keys to the car next season. A few reps now and some work in the offseason could ready Manziel to be the Browns' starting quarterback in 2015. But for the time being, the Browns are only hurting themselves by not sticking by the starter that has them at 7-5.

Hoyer’s contract is up in 2015, and if the Browns are shrewd, they’ll leverage him in a trade. If his last performance was this embarrassing one in Buffalo, his market value would take a serious hit. But if he continues to guide the Browns to a winning record, then Cleveland has a better shot at getting another offensive piece, or possibly Joe Haden 2.0 through a deal for Hoyer.

Hoyer is 10-5 when he starts for the Browns. If those 15 games were within the same season, Cleveland would not only be in the playoffs, they’d be considered a contender. Last week was just a bump in the road. For Cleveland to remain competitive, they must stick with Hoyer.
