It seems safe to say running back Toby Gerhart has fallen well short of expectations in his first season with the Jacksonville Jaguars, but that could all change Sunday when the team travels to Baltimore to play the Baltimore Ravens.
With Denard Robinson out for the rest of the season with a foot sprain, Gerhart is expected to receive the bulk of the work at running back.
Robinson took over the starter’s role from Gerhart in Week 8 against the Cleveland Browns and leads the team in rushing with 582 yards. With Robinson being placed on injured reserve this week, Gerhart will have a shot at redemption after struggling throughout the season.
The Jaguars signed Gerhart this past offseason to a three-year, $10.5 million contract to be the team’s workhorse at running back. Unfortunately, a foot injury in the season opener against the Philadelphia Eagles has hampered the former Stanford star throughout the season, limiting him to just 211 yards on 73 attempts (2.9 per carry).
However, Gerhart finally appears healthy and ready to take on a bigger role. His production has increased as of late. In the past three weeks, the fifth-year running back has rushed for 57 yards on 14 carries (4.1 per carry). The Jaguars will be hoping that trend continues Sunday.
It will not be easy for the team to establish the run against the Ravens’ fourth-ranked run defense. If the Jaguars are going to pull off the miraculous upset in Baltimore, they are going to need to find a balance offensively that only Gerhart can provide.
