The Dallas Cowboys won the NFC East with a 12-4 record after three-straight seasons of finishing 8-8. They will now host the Detroit Lions on Sunday Jan. 4, in a wild-card matchup. Jerry Jones and the Cowboys were very formidable in the 1990s and they were the Super Bowl champions for the 1992, 1993 and 1995 seasons. Cowboys fans have been optimistic this season, but here are five reasons they will fail to win Super Bowl XLIX.

5. Tony Romo

Romo has played well this season and has thrown 34 TDs and nine INTs. But he has struggled in big games and has won only one playoff game in his career. It is difficult to truly believe that Romo is ready to take Dallas to the Super Bowl and win it. In addition, Romo has been battling a back injury and there is no way to know if he will be able to play through it during the playoffs and go on to win the Super Bowl.

4. DeMarco Murray’s Injury

Murray averaged 115.3 YPG (first) and he rushed for 1,845 yards on 392 attempts. He had help from his offensive line, but there is no denying he had a great season. Then in Week 15, he injured his left hand when the Cowboys played the Eagles and he had to have to surgery. Murray’s success has helped Romo have a good season, and if he is limited or if he further injures his hand, it could seriously hurt the Cowboys’ Super Bowl chances.

3. Lack Of Recent Playoff Success

The Cowboys last made the playoffs in 2009 (their last playoff win) and they haven’t won a Super Bowl since 1995. Dallas has not enjoyed much playoff or late regular season success under Jason Garrett or with Romo as their QB. In his career, Garrett has made various poor clock-game management decisions, and Romo is prone to making poor throws at inopportune times. Those mistakes may cost Dallas a playoff game and a shot at the Super Bowl.

In the NFC, the Seahawks, Packers and Cardinals (if QB Drew Stanton’s knee holds up) are all better than the Cowboys. It’s doubtful Dallas makes the Super Bowl, but if they do, the Patriots, Steelers, Ravens and probably Colts and Broncos (if Peyton Manning is healthy) are all better than the Cowboys. There are many teams that Dallas could easily lose to in their quest to win the Super Bowl.

1. Defense

Many NFL fans believe the Cowboys’ defense was better this season when compared to 2013. However, this season, Dallas’ defense is allowing 22.0 points per game (19th) and 355.1 yards per game (19th). In 2013, the Cowboys gave up 27.0 points per game (26th) and 415.3 yards per game (32nd). The 2014 numbers don’t exactly blow away the 2013 numbers, and the little bit of improvement can largely be attributed to the offense controlling the ball more.
