With a 7-8-1 record, the Carolina Panthers emerged as the winner of the NFC South, which means they will host a playoff game in the Wild Card round. It was the first time in franchise history the Panthers will reach the postseason in back-to-back seasons. Even though there is plenty right going for Carolina at the moment, there are still at least five reasons why the Panthers won’t win Super Bowl XLIX.

The Panthers posted a 3-4-1 record on the road while surrendering 27.0 points per game. Even though they will host the Arizona Cardinals in the Wild Card round, they will have to play on the road if they want to reach the Super Bowl. That could be an issue, especially when the top two seeds in the NFC have a combined 15-1 record at home.

Carolina made two key moves in the secondary after the blowout loss to the Minnesota Vikings in Week 13. Since rookies Bene Benwikere and Tre Boston have taken over as starting defensive backs, the Panthers have yet to lose. It’s clear both players have contributed to the success of the team, but it’s also evident that their inexperience could prove costly in the playoffs. Elite quarterbacks are going to go right after them time and again.

The dismal offensive line has improved tremendously over the course of the season. With that said, they still have allowed 42 sacks, which could be a detrimental statistic against premier defenses in the playoffs. The reality is if the offensive line doesn’t continue to play as they have in the second half of the season, Carolina could struggle winning the battle in the trenches.

It’s true the Panthers have won four straight to clinch their division. It’s also true they went without a win from Oct. 5 to Dec. 7. That’s two straight months without a tally in the win column. Anyone who has watched Carolina this season knows they can easily fall into a funk, which is not a good attribute to have in the playoffs.

Cam Newton has the skill set that has to keep defensive coordinators up at night. Not only has he shown the ability to dominate through the air, but also he can gash opponents on the ground. As impressive as he has been as of late, there’s no denying he can be very inconsistent. It’s that inconsistency that could give the Panthers all sorts of problems in the playoffs. He can be easily knocked off his game, which is exactly how opponents can win.
