Coaching Not In Bill Cowher’s Future Plans

With NFL head coaching jobs becoming available thanks to several men getting the ax already, it is almost like clockwork that some of the veteran coaches who have hung up their playbooks are being asked to come out of retirement. Former Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Bill Cowher is one of them. Unfortunately for the interested teams, Cowher has no intention of giving up his day job.

“It was great this year to be on the sidelines for some of the Thursday games (for CBS) and get to be up close to it,” Cowher said, according to CBAS Sports. “You see the officials, you see some of the assistant coaches, you see them it does get your blood going. But no, I’m in a really good place.”

“I really enjoy my job at CBS,” he continued. “I’m enjoying all the involvement with that and the Thursday football. It’s good. You’re not going to see me on the sidelines. I enjoy it, you miss it, but not enough to get back.”

Cowher is making over $3 million annually with CBS, a job that has far less stress than what accompanies a head-coaching job in the NFL. That, above all else, is the top reason why anyone in Cowher’s position would be foolish to give up a studio analyst job to return to the sidelines.

Still, one has to assume Cowher listens to the offers. Teams such as the Oakland Raiders and New York Jets are desperate to find a big-name coach to take them to the next level. The respective owners of those teams are also prepared to let the money fly, which should be incentive enough to come out of coaching retirement.

On the other hand, Cowher has a certain level of comfort, financially and professionally, that he is unwilling to give up.
