In years past, it has been rather easy to figure out who the NFL MVP was going to be. Sure, there were no layups, but it has been incredibly rare for people to be shocked at who the winner is. This year might be a little different. There are at least two players who are very deserving of the high honor, which means the voters will have their work cut out for them. Here are the top five candidates for the 2014 NFL MVP.

The Patriots are once again the most feared team in football. Look no further than Tom Brady when searching for the reason why. He may not have the same luster he once did, but there’s no denying Brady is what makes New England tick. He passed for 4,109 yards, 33 touchdowns, nine interceptions and a 97.4 passer rating this season. The biggest reason for his MVP candidacy is the Patriots continue to be one of the favorites to win the Super Bowl.

4. DeMarco Murray

DeMarco Murray was by far the most superior running back this season. His 115.3 yards per game and 1,845 total rushing yards were head and shoulders above everyone else. He also rushed for 13 touchdowns, which tied for the league best. There’s no question his outstanding performance in 2014 is one of the main reasons the Cowboys won their division and are headed to a divisional playoff showdown against the Packers at Lambeau Field.

3. Tony Romo

Tony Romo had the best statistical season of his career in 2014, and that’s saying something. He completed 69.9 percent of his passes for 3,705 yards, 34 touchdowns, nine interceptions and an impressive 113.2 passer rating. Even more importantly, he’s the only quarterback this season to lead his team to victory against the Seahawks in Seattle. He also led the Cowboys to an 8-0 record on the road while playing with an injured back.

2. J.J. Watt

In any other year, J.J. Watt would be the NFL MVP. I have to imagine even though he’s a lock for Defensive Player of the Year, he would still appreciate a more superior hardware. What Watt did in 2014 is about as impressive as it gets. He became the first player in history to record 20-plus sacks in two seasons with his 20.5 sacks this season. He also had 78 tackles, four forced fumbles, five fumble recoveries and three touchdown receptions.

1. Aaron Rodgers

Aaron Rodgers will be the 2014 NFL MVP, and rightfully so. His 38-5 touchdown-to-interception ratio, 112.2 passer rating and 4,381 passing yards are obvious reasons for the honor. Then there was his performance against the Lions in Week 17. In a must-win game to clinch the division and No. 2 seed, Rodgers rebounded from a calf injury and led the Packers to victory. Green Bay isn’t the same team without him, and that’s reason enough for the award.
