10 Burning Questions For 2015 NFL Conference Championships

We are one step away from the Humongous Conga Line (my favorite way to say Big Dance yet) and four teams remain in the hunt to hoist the Lombardi Trophy. After this weekend we will know who will be in the Super Bowl and who will just be drafting later than everyone else. Here are 10 burning questions heading into the Conference Championships.

The Patriots’ ground attack has an impressive resume against the Colts, racking up over 300 yards in their last two meetings and eight touchdowns. Hopefully that will be Chuck Pagano and the Colts’ defense main focus heading into Foxborough on Sunday. If the Colts want any chance of winning this game, they’ll need to make the Patriots one dimensional.

Last year Richard Sherman was boosted into legendary status with his postgame interview where he called out Michael Crabtree, cemented himself as one of the best trash talkers in the NFL and scared the poo out of Erin Andrews. If the Seahawks win Sunday, what gem will the corner have for us this time?

8. Will Andrew Luck Avoid the Crucial Turnover?

For as great as Luck has been in his still very young career (the guy is finishing up his third season), he has a knack for making the wrong pass at the wrong time, leading to often game-sealing turnovers. Luck will have to be spot-on against a Patriots’ secondary which picked off Joe Flacco twice last week.

Yes, the Seahawks stifled the Packers back in Week 1, but let’s be honest; every team is a lot different/better than they were back in Week 1. The Packers have the amazing ability to spread out a defense and pass the ball to anyone. Shutdown Jordy Nelson? Fine, Davante Adams and Randall Cobb will have huge games. Out of all the offenses this defense has faced, Green Bay’s is the most potent.

While they managed to pick off Flacco twice last week, the Patriots’ defense did not have its best showing against the Ravens. Luckily against the Colts, the Pats won’t have to worry so much about their rushing attack and can focus purely on Luck and the pass attack. Still, if they want to win this game and possibly the next one, this defense is going to have to rebound.

5. Can the Colts Contain Rob Gronkowski?

The real question is can anyone contain Rob Gronkowski, but since the Colts are most likely to be his next victim, I phrased the question towards them. A healthy Gronk in the postseason goes a long way for this Patriots offense, and the Colts will need to shut him down if they have any chance of winning. The probabilities, however, are small.

4. Who Has a Bigger Day: Eddie Lacy or Marshawn Lynch?

4. Who Has a Bigger Day: Eddie Lacy or Marshawn Lynch?

Eddie Lacy needs to have a big game if the Packers want to pull off the upset while Lynch is going up against a defense that has struggled mightily against the run, including giving up 123 yards to DeMarco Murray last week. If Lacy can get his legs moving and the Packers can hold Lynch to short yardage, then this game has upset written all over it.

3. Can Gimpy Aaron Rodgers Win In Seattle?

It was very apparent last week against the Cowboys that Rodgers was not the normal half-man, half-running back, half-god he normally is. Against a much better Seahawks defense that loves to get pressure on the quarterback, it’ll be interesting to see if some of Rodgers’ mobility has returned to him. If so, it could help him quite a bit scrambling from pressure and finding open receivers downfield.

2. Can the Colts Pull Off the Upset?

Short answer: No.

The Colts did knock off the Broncos, but that team was led by Peyton Manning’s ghost and Aqib Talib decided to pull his usual playoff MIA stunt. Against a Tom Brady-led offense and a Darrelle Revis-led defense in Foxborough, the Colts have a next to impossible task of knocking off the Pats.

Short answer: Yes.

The Packers are a rare form of offense, one that can beat you in every way imaginable. If Aaron Rodgers is healthy (which hopefully he will be at least slightly), the Packers have a very real chance of coming into Seattle and beating the defending champs. Will it happen? Who knows, but they have a much better chance than those Colts do.
