5 Free Agents the Pittsburgh Steelers Should Sign in 2015

In 2014, the Pittsburgh Steelers didn’t just make a splash in free agency; the Rooneys cannon-balled right in, throwing cash around like it was going out of style. Ironically, the most worthwhile splurge came off the field in the form of Mike Munchak, an offensive line coach who has turned Pittsburgh’s maligned five into one of the best young units in the league. This year, it’s time for the players to perform.

It’s incredibly likely that the Pittsburgh brass has neither the patience nor the cash to spend on the polarizing Suh, but that doesn’t mean it isn’t fun to speculate. Suh’s presence in a 3-4 defensive front rotation would turn a mediocre defensive line into an immediate standout with the help of emotional leader Cam Heyward, the serviceable Steve McLendon and raw but talented rookies Stephon Tuitt and Dan McCullers.

The Steelers desperately need help in the secondary, and Louis Delmas sounds like precisely the kind of under-the-radar signing the franchise might try to bring in. Amid speculation that the legendary Troy Polamalu is nearing retirement, Delmas could find himself converted to strong safety. His more conventional play should match well with Mike Mitchell too, who frequently looked lost as Polamalu's clean-up man in 2014.

This fullback/tight end hybrid might just be the most underrated member of the 2015 free agent class. Whoever signs him will be glad they did, as Clay has frequently displayed fine blocking and excellent receiving skills out of the backfield. With Matt Spaeth a projected cap casualty, Clay would make an excellent backup to Heath Miller or lead blocker for Le’Veon Bell out of the strong or I-formations.

Expect the Steelers to pass on sexier running back options in Frank Gore and Ryan Mathews and instead look to the quitter Powell. Powell might be the very definition of “average”, but frankly, that’s exactly what Pittsburgh needs. Bell is the best back in football, but he can’t do it all on his own. He will need a reliable relief man to chew up four yards at a time while he catches his breath after breaking out a screen for a gain of 60.

You can almost hear the Cleveland faithful crying foul from here. The 25-year-old Browns corner will be an unrestricted free agent at season’s end and will immediately take the No. 1 spot on the depth chart should he don the black and gold. Ike Taylor has severely passed his prime, Antwon Blake has looked good but remains inexperienced and William Gay and Brice McCain have been solid, but are not a long-term answer.
