The Buffalo Bills had a season to remember in 2014. Sure, finishing 9-7 and missing the playoffs is not ideal, but the Bills showed plenty of potential to give them hope that the future is bright. That future just got a little more promising with the hiring of Rex Ryan as the team’s new head coach.

According to ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter, the Bills are currently finalizing a deal with Ryan that will make him the coach for the foreseeable future. Despite the team looking at 11 other candidates over the past two weeks, there is no question Ryan is the best fit for the team.

Buffalo showed during the regular season that the defense is worthy of a championship, which is exactly what Ryan is looking for. Sure, the offense is a massive work in progress, especially after quarterback Kyle Orton decided to call it a career. But, the defense, which led the league in sacks (54) in 2014, has the potential to take the team to the promise land.

It is actually rather ironic that Ryan was fired from a team that was in a very similar situation. For almost the entire time he was the head coach of the New York Jets, the defense nearly always played at an impressive level and the offense stumbled due to a lack of a quality play at the quarterback position. Essentially, that is exactly what he will have in Buffalo. The promising part is Ryan led the Jets to two straight AFC Championships with that formula.

In six seasons with the Jets, Ryan posted a 50-52 record, including 4-2 in the playoffs.
