The quad injury that hampered Denver Broncos quarterback Peyton Manning for the last month of the 2014 NFL season will also be the reason he will be unable to play in the Pro Bowl next weekend.

In the past 16 seasons, Manning was elected to the Pro Bowl a whopping 14 times (1999-’00, 2002-’10, 2012-’14). Of those 14 Pro Bowl selections, he did not appear in only two of them because he was playing in the Super Bowl. Other than that, Manning always played, regardless of injury.

Unfortunately, the impressive amount of Pro Bowl appearances will come to an end this year.

“It’s a great honor to be selected to the Pro Bowl, and I’ve always taken the obligation to play in it very seriously,” Manning said, according to the Denver Post. “I’ve believed that, if healthy, it’s a player’s responsibility to play in the game because of what it means to be voted in by your peers and the fans.

“I’m disappointed that I’m just not healthy enough this year to be part of it. It’s going to be tough not being down there with the other guys, but it hasn’t had enough time to heal.”

Clearly, Manning’s decision is the correct one, especially if he intends to continue playing next season. Of course, that is something that is up in the air due to a combination of age and the fact that Broncos president of football operations John Elway is cleaning out the coaching staff, which already includes head coach John Fox.

It is unknown exactly when Manning suffered the injury that clearly prevented him from being his usual stellar self down the stretch, but what is known is that the veteran signal caller tore his right quad muscle. Intense bruising formed due to the injury, which made it difficult for Manning to play at a high level.
