No one around Dallas is happy about the Dez Bryant contract situation, but if there’s one guy making the most of it, it’s Terrance Williams. Often overlooked after having an up-and-down season in 2014, Williams has somewhat flown under the radar in this offense. In Bryant’s absence, however, Williams has shined in OTAs. Needless to say, that’s exactly what the Dallas Cowboys need from the third-year wide receiver.

With the departure of DeMarco Murray, opposing defenses will no longer need to stack the box with eight-plus defenders. More attention can be paid to Bryant and Williams, meaning both receivers will need to beat tighter coverage more often than in 2014. Bryant has been used to seeing two defenders thrown his way since he came into the league, but Williams will need to adjust accordingly.

Thankfully, Williams has gotten nothing but high praise from coaches and players. His quarterback, Tony Romo, had some big words for Williams, saying he’s had “one of the best offseasons I’ve seen in a while.” Nearly as important as hearing that from coaches, Williams gaining Romo’s trust is key for the passing game to have success. The Cowboys have plenty of weapons on offense, which should give Williams ample opportunities to make plays.

One area of his game that coaches have been working on with Williams is using his hands to catch more than his body. Williams has been known as a body-catcher for most of his career, which hurts him when challenging defenders for jump balls. That’s one area where Bryant shines and makes his presence felt, allowing Romo to just throw it up and be assured Bryant will make a play on the ball. If Williams can iron out this part of his game, he’ll shine in this offense.

Although Williams did catch three more touchdown passes in 2015 (8) than in 2014 (5), his catches and receiving yards decreased. He also faded down the stretch after starting the year strong, catching just two touchdowns — both in a Week 16 blowout against the Indianapolis Colts — in the final nine regular season games. If Dallas is going to make a deep playoff run, the Cowboys will need Williams to stay more consistent and avoid having stretches of zero productivity. With more consistency, the third-year receiver could have a big year in 2015.
