Tennessee Titans Training Camp Profile WR Dorial Green-Beckham

Tennessee Titans rookie wide receiver Dorial Green-Beckham is a project. He possesses every physical attribute needed to be a successful playmaker in the NFL and his athleticism is hard to match, but he comes with baggage. Green-Beckham slipped into the second round and was selected No. 40 overall by the Titans. The reasons for this have nothing to do with his ability to play football, but rather his off the field antics.

He enrolled at Oklahoma in 2014 after he was dismissed from Missouri‘s football program for being the subject of a burglary and assault investigation by police (he was never charged). He was also arrested twice for marijuana possession while at Missouri. He had to sit out the 2014 season due to transfer rules and never actually played a down for the Sooners. He did practice and work out with the team, however.

While this is another story in and of itself, it is important to quickly note that Green-Beckham had a difficult upbringing. As a child, he bounced around from home to home, his mother was a drug addict and he never met his father.

He was adopted by John (who was also his high school football coach) and Tracy Beckham while he was a sophomore in high school, and despite the previously mentioned incidents, they have helped him turn his life around. While some of his antics are inexcusable, Green-Beckham had a difficult childhood and was a product of his environment. He has not had an incident since he left Missouri.

Let’s actually get to football now. Green-Beckham posted 87 receptions, 1,278 yards and 17 touchdowns in two seasons at Missouri. As a sophomore in 2013, Green-Beckham scored 12 touchdowns for the Tigers. That year he led the team in touchdowns, as well as receptions (59) and yards (883).

Although he has not seen game action since 2013, he has a good chance of seeing the field as a rookie for the Titans. First of all, he is 6-foot-5, 237 pounds – that is nearly identical size to a player named Calvin Johnson. Green-Beckham also ran a 4.49-second 40-yard dash at the Combine and has sure hands with a wide catch radius.

The Titans’ current starting wideouts are Kendall Wright and Justin Hunter. Hunter has not really shown enough to be considered a solid receiver – just 28 catches on 67 targets last season for 498 yards and three touchdowns. Wright is probably the No. 1 option. Veterans Hakeem Nicks and Harry Douglas were also added in the offseason.

Expect Green-Beckham to begin as the team’s third option, but look for him to quickly gain the trust of rookie quarterback Marcus Mariota. Do not be surprised if Green-Beckham takes over Hunter’s starting role. If he can focus, stay out of trouble and play like he has in the past, Mariota to Green-Beckham could become one of the most feared QB-WR tandems in the league for years.
