The New York Giants flew under the radar over the offseason, but they made their share of incredibly wise free agent acquisitions. Securing the services of RB Shane Vereen is one that projects to pay huge dividends going forward, as he adds a dimension to the Giants offense that is highly frustrating to opposing defenses.

Vereen isn’t an overwhelming option when carrying the ball. However, he’s a pass catching specialist out of the backfield who can do big-time damage in space. New York has a plethora of talent at receiver. Odell Beckham Jr., Victor Cruz and Rueben Randle are going to give opposing secondaries scary nightmares as they game plan to stop this three-headed monster. Tight end Larry Donnell is no slouch either, giving the Giants what will become a top-five receiving unit in the NFL.

With the receiving corps commanding so much attention out wide, expect to see a ton of delayed screens to Vereen implemented into the Giants offense. This strategy will work wonders, as the receivers carry coverage away from the line of scrimmage while beginning their routes, leaving the flats completely vulnerable.

Vereen will ultimately expose defenses on countless occasions throughout the season. Even if defensive coordinators know the screen is coming, there’s really no way to prevent it from succeeding other than shifting focus away from the receivers in coverage, which would be a costly mistake.

Rashad Jennings had a career year with the Giants in 2014, and he will still see the majority of looks for New York’s backfield. However, Jennings is 30 years old, so he needs plays off. Vereen’s presence not only gives the Giants a perfect complement to Jennings’ skill set, but also someone who can take some of the workload off Jennings’ shoulders without sacrificing production.

A healthy and fresh Jennings down the stretch of the season could easily help the Giants cement a playoff berth, as December football is often a war of attrition as much as anything else. Adding in third-string RB Andre Williams, who had a fine rookie campaign in 2014, the Giants project to have the makings of a three-headed monster in the backfield as well.

Keep an eye on Giants training camp over the summer, as you’ll be witnessing the development of a very special unit on its way to big things.
