When the Philadelphia Eagles fired their head coach and general manager Chip Kelly, it was unclear what their plan to replace him would be. It’s highly unlikely that they would bring in a coach and give him full control of the roster like they did with Kelly, so the team would be wise to hire a general manager before they make a decision on a coach. That said, the Eagles should look to bring in an experienced front office veteran to fix their mess of a franchise, and current Atlanta Falcons GM Thomas Dimitroff could be a great fit for the team.

Dimitroff is a two-time Sporting News NFL Executive of the Year award winner who has fallen out of favor in Atlanta. The Falcons have had a couple of subpar seasons, including this season in which they started 5-0 but missed the playoffs, and it appears as though Dimitroff is going to take the fall for the team’s collapse. It’s not entirely unwarranted, as the team has had depth issues, but Dimitroff has still been a solid GM during his time with Atlanta.

Dimitroff’s best draft came in his first season as the team’s GM back in 2008. In that draft, the Falcons selected Boston College quarterback Matt Ryan who developed into a top 10 NFL quarterback during his career. The team also got countless other starters in that class, including WR Harry Douglas, LB Curtis Lofton, DE Kroy Biermann and OT Sam Baker. Most of those players have left the team since then, but they had a mostly positive impact when they were with the Falcons.

Since that draft in 2008, Dimitroff hasn’t put together any great classes, but he has drafted well early. He has added talented players like Desmond Trufant, Jake Matthews, Vic Beasley and most notably, he traded up to select Julio Jones in the 2011 NFL Draft. His major issue has been finding impactful players on day three, which has had a major negative effect on the team’s depth.

Still, Dimitroff would be a terrific fit in Philadelphia. The Eagles already have a good amount of depth, and they just need some more impact players at the skill positions like quarterback, wide receiver and cornerback. Those are positions that Dimitroff has been able to properly address during his career, and he would be able to bring the Eagles back to contention pretty quickly in the weak NFC East.

Dimitroff may end up staying in Atlanta, but it wouldn’t hurt the Eagles to look into him as an option for their general manager position. He has a proven track record, and if he can get better at scouting late-round prospects, Dimitroff could be one of the better general managers in the NFL.
