Ben McAdoo Deserves To Coach The New York Giants

Ben McAdoo New York Giants Offensive Coordinator

Brad Penner – USA TODAY Sports

It really wasn’t a surprise that the New York Giants decided to part ways with Tom Coughlin. It was reported today that Coughlin elected to step down as the Giants head coach, but it was more likely a mutual decision reached by the two parties. In other words, the Giants told Coughlin he was out and gave him the option of stepping down.

Regardless of what happened with Coughlin, the Giants need to find a replacement quickly, and they should look to do it with an in-house guy: offensive coordinator Ben McAdoo.

McAdoo joined the Giants just two seasons ago, and his work has been nothing short of spectacular. For most of his tenure, the team lacked a real threat at running back, had a mediocre offensive line, only possessed one real receiving threat at a time, and had a quarterback who led the league in interceptions the year before he arrived. McAdoo has turned the unit around in remarkable fashion.

For starters, McAdoo has completely transformed Eli Manning into one of the league’s best passers. In two seasons under McAdoo, Manning has completed 62.6 and 63.1 percent of his passes respectively, with 65 touchdowns and only 28 interceptions. He has also thrown for over 4,400 yards in each season. McAdoo’s system just seems to be a perfect fit for Manning, and he has shown the ability to work with well with quarterbacks in the past. He was very successful when working with Aaron Rodgers too, so his work with Manning hasn’t been a fluke.

Along with Manning’s success, McAdoo has helped to get the most out of the receivers this year. Odell Beckham Jr. has obviously been terrific, but the Giants got good production out of marginal talents like Dwayne Harris, Rueben Randle, and rookie tight end Will Tye. Not every coordinator would be able to get that much out of those guys, so that’s a positive for McAdoo.

There’s not many candidates out there that would be better for the team than McAdoo. In fact, my colleague here at RantSports, Brad Berreman, thinks that there is only one head coach who is a better fit for the Giants, and he may not even become available. McAdoo would give the Giants continuity, something which was important to the team under Coughlin’s tenure.

McAdoo just seems to be one of the best options on the table for the Giants. The front office will likely give him an interview and if he impresses, he could end up being the team’s next head coach.

Eli Manning Fights Back Tears For Tom Coughlin

For all of his faults, and missing the playoffs in 6 of 7 years and leading the Giants to several losses in 2015 with his questionable decisions among them, it's clear Tom Coughlin has had a profound impact on those men whom he had the privilege of leading. Just ask Eli Manning.
