Detroit Lions’ Calvin Johnson Needs To Retire

In 9 years Calvin Johnson has earned over 11,000 receiving yards, and 83 touchdowns.

These astounding numbers ensure that Detroit Lions wide receiver Calvin Johnson will be enshrined in Canton someday.

But as of now, it’s time he enjoys a peaceful retirement until then. Johnson is beat up. Over the past few years, he’s missed games and has been limited in practice. It’s affected his numbers — they’ve oddly gone up and down these past few years, and this year his 13.8 yards per catch average is his lowest ever.

The man’s body is battered. If he’s checked out mentally, it’s best for him to permanently clean out his locker and head another way. Detroit can start planning for a different future — though their plans can’t be trusted, anyway — and Johnson can enjoy a moneyed retirement.

Why should he damage his body and future health for a losing organization. Of his nine years, he’s only experienced two winning seasons and playoff berths. Why should he lay it all on the line for an organization that refutes new ways? Why should he sacrifice his well-being for ineptitude and more losing?

He shouldn’t. This season, Johnson and Matthew Stafford weren’t the titanic duo of the past. He struggled to beat one-on-one coverage and his longest play of the year went for 49 yards, which is low compared to previous seasons.

He isn’t the same threat he once was, and it’s time for Detroit to start looking ahead for themselves as well. The relieved salary cap can assist the Lions with filling some key holes such as the offensive and defensive lines.

This marriage’s end will benefit both parties more than it’ll hurt. Johnson is worn out and isn’t the same, and Detroit can’t afford to be tied into his lucrative contract any longer.

Johnson is an exalted receiver. He’ll always be in the mix as one of the greatest ever. But his run is over, and it’s time for both sides to move on.
