San Francisco 49ers Owner Jed York Once Left Reporter With $2,100 Bill

By Jason Fletcher

The San Francisco 49ers just opened Levi’s Stadium in 2014, but there were some questions as to whether or not the $2 billion facility would be ready for that 2014 season. In 2011, San Jose Mercury News beat writer Tim Kawakami took to Twitter to openly question whether the builders would meet the deadline.

While most people would take this as a joke like it was meant to be, 49ers owner Jed York held Kawakami to it and chose a place called French Laundry for the bet to be settled. Only the restaurant is one of the more expensive places to eat in Napa and Kawakami was forced to foot a $2,100 bill to pay for York’s meal, York’s wife’s meal and his own meal.

The worst part is that York seemingly didn’t realize how much $2,100 is to a beat writer.

If I thought Jed was sticking it to me, I’d almost be okay with it. I don’t even think he knew. I don’t think he knew what $2100 means to a sportswriter who didn’t inherit a billion-dollar team.

Must be nice to never have to worry about money your entire life.
