The New York Rangers got bad news on Monday. The team announced that they have put Rick Nash on IR and that he is still feeling symptoms from his head injury.
While the Rangers placed Nash on IR that does not mean he is out for a long period of time. The main reason he was put on IR is so the team can call up a player to replace him. If he was left a scratch he would be taking up a roster spot, but either way this is not good news for Ranger fans or Nash. Although the Rangers have not used the word concussion it is clear that is what Nash has. This is his second concussion over the last two seasons. While the Rangers are doing the right thing in making sure Nash sits out until he is 100 percent symptom free, this hurts the team right now.
The Rangers are struggling and were already without a top-six forward in Carl Hagelin before Nash got hurt. Now that Nash is out for a while this hurts the top two lines even more. Add in the fact that the Rangers are still trying to adapt to a new system and this makes for some struggles. Nash is vital to the Rangers’ success. Since joining the team, a Rangers team that does not feature Nash is 0-5-1. This season without Nash the Rangers have been outscored 18-4. They need him to come back healthy and better than ever.
Until Nash gets back the Rangers will struggle to score goals at a consistent rate. But the team can’t let their struggles affect their decision on Nash’s return.
