Philadelphia Flyers Suffer Ugly Loss To Washington Capitals
It was an ugly night for the Philadelphia Flyers. So ugly in fact that the nearly-full capacity crowd at one point shouted, “Fire Holmgren!” as loud as they could. It is a state of disarray for the Flyers organization right now.
They got blown out of their own building and frankly are a complete mess from the top on down right now. General Manager Paul Holmgren frankly needs to go. He has done a poor job running this organization the past few years, trading away scoring and not getting much in return and drafting poorly which has to be the foundation of a good team.
The Washington Capitals, led by Nicklas Backstrom, simply embarrassed the Flyers in their home building. Backstrom netted two goals and added an assist for three total points in a stellar evening. What adds insult to injury for the Flyers? The Capitals completed this rout without their best player, red-hot scoring machine Alexander Ovechkin. Brutal.
Owner Ed Snider needs to look in the mirror. He is stuck in his old ways of Broad Street Bully hockey as evidenced by a huge scrum at the end of the game that even included the goalies. He made a movie earlier in the week for an agitator in Steve Downie.
The philosophy is getting tiresome and as long as they stick with it, the Flyers will never go anymore. It is time for the Flyers to hit the re-set button. Rid yourselves of higher priced contracts on veteran players and start over. Build around the likes of Claude Giroux and for the love of God give him a legitimate offensive winger to play with.
It will be a long road back to contention for the Flyers. Time is up for Holmgren. Time is also up on this nightmare of a season.
