Washington Capitals — Throughout the 40-year history of the Washington Capitals, there have been a plethora of players who made an impact on the franchise. The Capitals rose from humble beginnings in the 70s to emerge as contenders in the 80s and 90s. Now Washington is a perennial playoff team due to the foundation that was built by former All-Stars and team captains. These five players are the greatest leaders in Capitals history.

He is the only player in NHL history to be named an All-Star in his first five seasons. Ovechkin has worn the "C" since 2010 and is currently leading the Caps to another solid season.

Oates led the league in assists in the following two seasons with 69 in 2000 and 64 in 2001. He was known for his unselfishness and playmaking ability. Though he failed as coach of the Capitals, it doesn't diminish his success on the ice.
