Throughout the 40-year history of the Washington Capitals, there have been a plethora of players who made an impact on the franchise. The Capitals rose from humble beginnings in the 70s to emerge as contenders in the 80s and 90s. Now Washington is a perennial playoff team due to the foundation that was built by former All-Stars and team captains. These five players are the greatest leaders in Capitals history.

Labre (left) was captain of the Capitals from 1976-78 and was the team's best player during this time. He played for Washington during its inaugural season and scored the franchise's first goal. Labre was a rugged defender who also contributed to the community. His jersey was the first to be retired in the Caps history.

While this may seem controversial, there is no denying that Alex Ovechkin is one of the most talented players to wear a Capitals uniform. Ever since he was drafted in 2004, Ovi has transformed the franchise into a contender and helped make D.C. a hockey town. He is the only player in NHL history to be named an All-Star in his first five seasons. Ovechkin has worn the "C" since 2010 and is currently leading the Caps to another solid season.

Oates is one of five Capitals to be enshrined in the Hall of Fame. He became captain during the 1999-2000 season and led the team with 71 points. Oates led the league in assists in the following two seasons with 69 in 2000 and 64 in 2001. He was known for his unselfishness and playmaking ability. Though he failed as coach of the Capitals, it doesn't diminish his success on the ice.

Langway was captain for Washington from 1982-93 and is also in the Hall of Fame. He led the franchise to its first playoff appearance in his first season and helped the team rise from mediocrity to contention. Langway is nicknamed the "Secretary of Defense" due to his superb performance and demanding leadership. The Caps made the playoffs during every season of his tenure.

Hunter is one of the most popular and successful players in Washington Capitals history. He was captain from 1994-99 and is one of only four Caps to have his jersey retired. Washington flourished during his time as captain, culminating in the franchise's only Stanley Cup appearance in the 1997-98 season. He is the heart and soul of the Capitals.
