The New York Rangers suffered a heartbreaking shutout loss on home ice in game seven of the Eastern Conference Finals. Despite the difficult way to end the season, New York still owns an impressive core group of players that should see the team be just as competitive next season. Within the core group are five key members who the Rangers will need most in order to return to the Stanley Cup Finals in the 2015-16 season.

5. Henrik Lundqvist

Henrik Lundqvist was New York’s playoff MVP during their run to the Eastern Conference Finals. He was visibly frustrated at the end of Game 7 watching his team get shutout for the second time in three games. However, if the Rangers are going to make another deep run next season, they'll need Lundqvist to be just as good if not better.

4. Keith Yandle

New York paid a big price to acquire Keith Yandle with another year remaining on his contract, a price that included highly regarded prospect Anthony Duclair. If the Rangers are going to get the value they paid for then they’ll need Yandle to be the team’s second best defensemen behind captain Ryan McDonagh.

3. Martin St. Louis

Martin St. Louis currently doesn’t have a contract to play in New York next season, but the Rangers will need to come to an agreement with the winger or risk being ridiculed for trading their captain at the time to acquire him. If New York can’t bring back St. Louis then they’ll have essentially traded Ryan Callahan who just beat the Rangers with the Lightning, for 15 months of a player who has struggled to fit in at times.

2. Mats Zuccarello

When Mats Zuccarello got hurt and left the lineup, a good chunk of the Rangers offense left with him. New York will need to hope Zuccarello can return to being 100 percent healthy by the start of the 2015-16 season and return to being an offensive force with the team’s top-six forwards.

1. Rick Nash

It’s reached the point in Rick Nash’s career that it no longer matters what he does in the regular season as he'll only be judged on his playoff performance. This is the second year in a row Nash’s postseason play has been questioned from an offensive standpoint, and it doesn’t matter if he scores two goals next season or 42 goals -- it's a strong playoff performance the Rangers will need most from him in 2016.
