Maple Leafs Triumph Over Capitals in Double OT Thriller on Kasperi Kapanen Game-Winner

By Anthony Blake

The only time the Toronto Maple Leafs have been to the Stanley Cup Playoffs in the last dozen years, the team somehow managed to squander a 4-1 third period lead in Game 7.

Redemption is a sweet thing, and the Leafs’ double overtime win over the Washington Capitals that saw them level their opening round series at one game apiece certainly qualifies.

Sometimes luck determines the outcome of a marathon playoff game in the NHL, and that was certainly the case here, as Capitals defenseman John Carlson lost his stick which allowed an open lane for Brian Boyle to deliver a pass for Kasperi Kapanen to finish in the yawning net behind Braden Holtby.

The Leafs have now stolen home-ice advantage from the top-seeded Capitals, so Game 3 will carry a lot of weight when they drop the puck back in Toronto.
