Broncos Safety Brian Dawkins Most Likely Taking Pay Cut to Return to Denver Next Season

Prior to the 2009 season, the Philadelphia Eagles parted ways with arguably their greatest safety of all time in Brian Dawkins–mainly because of his age and they thought he didn’t have much gas left in the tank. Two years later, Dawkins is preparing for his third season with the Denver Broncos and even though he signed a hefty five-year deal back in March 2009, it appears Weapon X may have to take a pay cut to do so.

According to Mike Klis of The Denver Post, Dawkins is ready to take a pay cut to return to the Broncos for the 2011 season–which comes rare in the NFL considering all of the players that fight for the big money. On Thursday, Dawkins discussed how he knew this would happen when he first signed with Denver.

“When I signed this deal I knew what it was,” Dawkins said during an interview courtesy of Klis’ article. “It was basically a two-year deal. I knew after a couple years there was a balloon (mechanism) and we most likely would have to restructure. That’s no big deal to me.”

As Klis indicates, Dawkins’ performance on the field over the last two seasons increased his 2011 base salary from $2.24 million to $6 million. He may be turning 38 in October, but Dawkins has always proven to be one of the most effective safeties in the NFL and most likely has another good season or two left in him. The fact that he’s willing to take such a large pay cut is just one of many examples as to why Dawkins is one of the most classiest players the NFL has to offer.
