Tom Martinez, the man known for being New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady’s mentor, has passed away at the age of 66.

Martinez died Tuesday after suffering a heart attack during dialysis.

He was best known for mentoring Brady since he was age 13 after meeting him at a quarterback coaching clinic and has been his coach ever since. Brady has often credited Martinez for being the quarterback that he is today.

Martinez coached football, women’s basketball and softball at the College of San Mateo where he racked up a combined total of 1,100 wins in his career.

He had been looking for a kidney for a long time according to Brady but there was not one available. Brady and Martinez were featured in numerous articles and videos documenting their relationship leading up to this year’s Super Bowl. Brady also used that platform to encourage organ donations so people like his long time friend and coach wouldn’t have to wait long for something that would save their life.

Brady will be even hungrier to win the Super Bowl next year to honor Martinez’s memory.

Brady Quinn is busy apologizing to Tim Tebow for less then flattering comments Quinn made about the Denver Broncos’ starting quarterback in a GQ article recently.

The article on Tebow was written by Michael Silver and titled “The year of Magical Stinking: An Oral History of Tebow Time.”

In the article, Quinn was quoted as saying, “We’ve had a lot of, I guess, luck, to put it simply.” He went on to say that he felt the fans were the reason Tebow jumped over him on the depth chart when taking over for Kyle Orton as the starter after a awful 1-4 start.

“I felt like the fans had a lot to do with that,” Quinn said in the article. “Just `cause they were chanting his name. There was a big calling for him. No, I don’t have any billboards. That would have been nice.”

Quinn also was quoted as saying that the way Tebow expresses his faith doesn’t “seem very humble to me.”

Quinn quickly went to Twitter after the article’s release on Tuesday, saying the comments did not show his true opinion of Tebow.

Tebow “deserves a lot of credit for our success and I’m happy for him and what he accomplished. Most importantly, he is a great teammate,” Quinn wrote.

He then told The Denver Post the following.

“I’ve reached out to Tim and he knows what I think of him as a player and a person,” Quinn said, per the Denver Post. “I hope my teammates know that I don’t think this season was based upon luck. I think it was more based upon the fight each of our teammates had to continually battle and win games in the end. And Tim was very much instrumental in our success, especially coming down the stretch in the last minutes of games.”

Quinn is currently an unrestricted free agent and it would seem he is trying to get back in the good graces of the Denver faithful and front office personnel including Denver legend, John Elway.

Whether this plea works or not, only time will tell.

What are your thoughts on both his comments and his quick rescinding of anything negative?

It appears that there are no hard feelings between Brady and his all-pro receiver, Welker, after Brady’s leading lady blamed the Patriot’s receivers for their Super Bowl loss against the Giants just a few weeks ago.

Here’s hoping that Brady can also convince the Patriots to ponying up the cash for the top wide receiver in the league.

Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers displayed one of the best regular seasons in NFL history this past season after throwing for 4,643 yards to go along with 45 touchdowns and just six interceptions. Despite Rodgers and the Packers falling short of their goal to reach the Super Bowl, the state of Wisconsin still plans on acknowledging their beloved quarterback for the type of season he displayed in 2011.

According to the Associated Press via Mike Florio of ProFootballTalk.com, the state Assembly in Wisconsin plans on honoring this year’s MVP with “Aaron Rodgers Day.” Coincidentally, “Aaron Rodgers Day” would happen to take place on December 12, 2012 (which is 12/12/12) to honor Rodgers since he wears No. 12 for the Packers.

While the Wisconsin Senate still needs to approve the special day for Rodgers, it must be a sweet feeling for Rodgers to have a specific day dedicated to himself for all of his accomplishments in Green Bay over the last couple of years. The only downfall of this day would be that it would take place during the middle of the week on a Wednesday instead of a Sunday–which would make it even more enjoyable for Rodgers if it happens.

Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton is coming off one of the best seasons ever displayed by an NFL rookie after throwing for 4,051 yards with 21 touchdowns to go along with 14 rushing touchdowns. At this rate, it’s safe to say the 2011 Rookie of the Year will receive numerous endorment deals throughout his career considering how many records Newton set during his first NFL season and thanks to ESPN–we can check Newton out in his new commercial for Under Armour.

As you can see in the video above, Newton teamed up with Under Armour and AraabMuzik for “Cam’s Night Out.” Instead of spending a night out on the town like most people do, the “club” Newton decided to spend his evening at was Bank of America Stadium for an intense workout with AraabMuzik providing the beats to fire him up.

Overall, a pretty cool commercial as Newton rocks some sweet Under Armour gear (how about those Carolina blue shoes?) while displaying the skills to prove why he’s one of the rising stars in the NFL. Thanks to ESPN for the video above.

Since 2010, Stevie Johnson has emerged as one of the top wide receivers in the league for the Buffalo Bills after breaking the 1,000-yard mark in each of the last two seasons while totaling 17 touchdowns. While the Bills would love to bring back the former Kentucky standout for a fifth season in 2012, it looks like that may be more difficult than originally expected.

According to the Associated Press via Michael David Smith of ProFootballTalk.com, Johnson and the Bills are “far apart” when it comes to reaching an agreement on a new contract. The two sides would like to get a deal done before free agency kicks off on March 13 and considering the report claims the organization isn’t expected to use the franchise tag on their top wideout–there’s a good chance Johnson could end up hitting the open market in a few weeks.

If that does end up happening, that could mean bad news for the Bills considering there are plenty of teams out there looking to add depth at wide receiver and most likely would be willing to pay Johnson the type of money he’s looking for. Even if Buffalo did want to place the tag on Johnson, it would still be pretty costly as the tender for wideouts is expected to be around $9.6 million for the 2012 season.

Mario Williams continues appeasing Houston with his comments as unrestricted free agency approaches but dollar for dollar, the Texans can’t offer him market value.

Were the team to franchise the #1 overall pick from 2006, he would cost $22.9 million against the salary cap. And that would put Houston beyond their threshold. So if Williams is to remain a Texan, he’ll have to accept a team-friendly deal.

Perhaps he’s interested in a pair of longhorns on the front of his burnt orange lamborghini?

Prior to his pectoral injury last season, Super Mario had already racked up five sacks and appeared comfortable in his new role as a pass-rushing outside linebacker.

He adapted to the 3-4 scheme as well as a move from defensive end and had another Pro Bowl selection in his future.

It was Wade Phillips instilling a previously unseen toughness in the Texans defense that propelled them to an AFC South championship and a win in the first playoff game in franchise history.

And while Williams keeps insisting that he’s loved his time in the Bayou City, the truth is that free agency means another mega-contract.

Any number of teams would be more than willing to give the former N.C. State standout the money he desires because he possesses a skill set that’s valued on par with offensive tackles and quarterbacks.

His ability to get to the passer makes him admirable for considering a hometown discount but probably not savvy in the eyes of his agent.

A beneficiary of a rookie deal that totaled $54 million, there’s something to be said of playing on a team slated for sustained success rather than chasing additional dollars.

It’s an enticing sale by Rick Smith and Gary Kubiak, offering a chance at winning the AFC.

But too many athletes find solace in more zeroes in their bank accounts and Williams will have to buck that trend.

Denver Broncos quarterback Tim Tebow has been working on his heavily scrutinized throwing motion with UCLA’s new offensive coordinator Noel Mazzone. Mazzone and his son Taylor have been working with Tebow twice a day for a couple of hours since last weekend.

The main things that they are working on with Tebow is his efficiency with his motion and his footwork. This isn’t the first time that Mazzone has coached Tebow. The two worked together when he was coming out of storied Florida career and entering the draft in 2010. Their improvements in that short amount of time landed Tebow with a first-round selection to the Broncos. Mazzone and Tim also worked together last offseason.

NFL teams are limited in the amount of practice time they can have with their players during the offseason but there is no rules regarding practice with a non-affiliated coach. Mazzone said that the Broncos know the work he is doing with Tebow and that he has regular communication with Broncos QB coach Adam Gase. He also said that he didn’t want to do anything against the Broncos’ wishes hence the continued communication between himself and the Broncos.

We’ve all heard how Tebow has a strong work ethic and it doesn’t surprise me to hear that he is already trying to get better just two weeks after the Super Bowl, which marks the end of the NFL season. Later on this offseason expect to hear news or see video of Broncos VP of Football Operations and hall of famer John Elway working with Tebow as well.

ESPN’s Monday Night Football has announced that they are switching to a two man booth.

The network announced that Ron Jaworski signed a 5-year deal to appear on other programming on ESPN and will no longer be a color analyst for MNF. Current play-by-play announcer Mike Tirico and color analyst John Gruden will be the duo that calls the games on Monday night’s.

“Jaws” has called MNF games for the last five seasons but he will now just appear on various other shows year ’round on the network.

Gruden joined the broadcast in 2009 and just recently signed a 5-year extension in October to stay in the booth.

This will be the first time in 15 years that ESPN will only have a two man broadcast for Monday Night games.

Tirico is one of the best play-by-play guys in the business and Gruden has come into his own as an analyst since he joined. He provides great insight from a coaches perspective and I think the viewers appreciate that. Jaworski seems to have fallen out of favor with the audience and that could be a reason for the move.

The duo will make their debut Sept. 10. No match-up set yet as the 2012 NFL schedule has yet to be released.
