Blake Smith Scores, Montreal Impact Stun Sporting Kansas City

Eric Bolte-USA TODAY Sports

When Blake Smith scored in the sixth minute of stoppage time to give the Montreal Impact a much needed win over Sporting Kansas City, not only did they take one step closer to cementing their place in the MLS Playoffs, but they helped out other teams in the Eastern Conference.

The New England Revolution, Houston Dynamo, Philadelphia Union and New York Red Bulls are all fighting to get closer to the top of the Eastern Conference while it is still possible. Montreal snapped a three game winning streak for Kansas City and helped take the momentum away from the top of the conference, which gives the other teams room to try and catch up to the top and leaves the door open for the Chicago Fire and Columbus Crew to continue to climb in the standings.

The Impact showed their guts and “never give up” attitude in the win over SKC. They played great on defense and were annoying enough on offense to steal a victory at the end. Montreal deserved this victory, and it will be a great confidence boost for the rest of the MLS season.

The more I watch the Impact play, the clearer it becomes that they are not just a contender for an MLS Playoff berth, but a legitimate contender for the MLS Cup. Other teams in the Eastern Conference that assume that they will make it to the MLS Playoffs better be prepared against this team.

The most important thing that other MLS teams should have learned from SKC’s last second loss – don’t ever give anything but one 100 percent against the Impact or you will lose.

They did help out other Eastern conference teams. However, if Montreal had tied NYRB would have been two points ahead of them and the union would have been one point ahead. But yes overall it kept things even tighter in the eastern conference.
