When Real Madrid decided to sell Mesut Ozil to Arsenal on the last day of the transfer window, many wondered why the Spanish club was letting such a talented player go. The German midfielder is one of the best play makers in the world and would have been a big asset for Real in their title race against Barcelona this season. Instead, the German magician is enlightening the Emirates Stadium with his incredible talent.

Ozil has transformed Arsenal since his arrival. The German playmaker has been exceptional since joining the Gunners on Sept. 2, a few hours before the transfer window shut down. Ozil has already scored two goals and provided four assists in seven Premier League games. Very rarely a player had influenced the game of a top team so quickly.

One of Ozil’s main qualities is his movement off the ball which is very underrated in football because it is less obvious than speed, power or dribbling, but is equally important. It is no coincidence if he finds himself unmarked so often. His intelligent runs are not only made into the right spaces, but they are also timed to perfection. When playing in such a crowded area of the pitch like Ozil does, intelligent runs make a big difference.

Along with his great movement off the ball, Ozil has got excellent vision, passing ability, creativity and technique. With his creativity and vision, he makes passes that seem impossible to other players. It is also very hard to take the ball away from him as his technique allows him to keep the ball very close to his feet.

Another feature of Ozil is his awareness. He seems to know exactly where he is on the field and where his teammates are. The German playmaker thinks, sees and passes before other players. Every move, pass or run he makes is intended to create something for himself or his teammates. He has recorded more assists than any other player in Europe’s top five leagues (EnglandGermanyItalySpain and France) in the last five years.

Ozil has been at Arsenal for only two months, but has already made a huge impact. By buying him, Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has unquestionably made the best signing of the summer transfer window. Beyond the goals and the assists he provides, Ozil has lifted Arsenal’s spirit. With him on their team, the Gunners believe that they can win a Premier League title they are running after since 2004.
