Manchester United’s midfield play hasn’t been good this year, and even though it’s quickly improving it wouldn’t be strange to see reinforcements arriving in January.
Marouane Fellaini hasn’t play as expected since his arrival on the transfer deadline. Tim Cleverley has failed to be consistent, and with Michael Carrick sidelined with an Achilles injury The Red Devils could use an upgrade in midfield for the final part of the season.
One player they shouldn’t consider, however, is Real Madrid’s midfielder Xabi Alonso who’s been rumored on the Old Trafford outfit’s radar.
The Spain international runs out of contract this next June. Even though he’ll be able to discuss terms with any other team as soon as January if he’s unable to reach an agreement with Los Merengues, however, Manchester United shouldn’t try to sign him.
There’s no doubt he’s one of the best midfielders in the world, but if he arrives he wouldn’t be much of an upgrade over what the team already has on the roster. He has a similar play style of Michael Carrick and his age doesn’t make him a player that could be there for years to come. He’s quickly putting his best years behind him and would be a nice addition, but he wouldn’t be the difference maker that the team needs for the reminder of the year.
Manchester United could certainly use some help in the middle of the pitch, but they could be better suited to target another midfielder once the transfer market opens in January. Younger players like Borussia Dortmund’s Ilkay Gündogan or Athletic Bilbao’s Ander Herrera seem to be better fits for the team going forward.
